VC in the UAE: Shorooq Partners & the Digitalisation of the GCC Economy

In life, it's sometimes good to have a plan. Having invested in well known UAE companies such as Sarwa, MunchOn, SmartCrowd, Nymcard and Clara, Shin and his business partner Mahmoud Ali are guided by what they refer to as "investment thesis."

I caught up with Shin to discover how Shorooq is making a studied and ambitious bet on the future of digital commerce in the GCC.

Over the past five years there has been a transformation in Venture Capital (VC) across the Middle East, but in the UAE and GCC in particular. One company that symbolises the transition from the family based firms of a decade ago, to the quickly emerging institutional investors of today, is Shorooq.

The firm received the Fintech Investor of the Year award in 2019. Forbes Middle East has rated the firm one of the top 20 VCs in the Middle East, and the number one VC firm in Abu Dhabi.

Shane Shin and Mahmoud Adi met and gained experience at Abu Dhabi’s Mubdala investment fund before moving on to founding Shorooq.

A graduate in Finance and Mandarin at The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, Shin began a career as an investment banker and entrepreneur in the US. With a new office in Riyadh, Shorooq appears to be positioning itself for an economy of integrated payments systems, new forms of ownership, decentralised logistics and enhanced information access across consumer and business systems.
